U.S. Home: Survey by Times is not accurate

February 4, 2009 by root

A U.S. Home Corp. customer-satisfaction survey proves that a scientific poll conducted by the St. Petersburg Times is inaccurate, according to Gene Lanton, president of the builder's Central Florida division.

The Times, using the random-sample method employed by Gallup Poll and others, found that U.S. Home customers were far less satisfied with their builder than customers of the four next-largest bay area builders of comparably priced homes.

Nightmare Home

Want to buy a new home? Your timing's great.

Want it well built? Your timing's awful.

Dennis Preslar found out first-hand.

In 1998, he and his family moved into a new house built by U.S. Home Corp. in the Hunter's Green subdivision of Tampa.

According to Preslar, they had no hot water downstairs for almost three months. One bedroom had no air-conditioning ducts. The kitchen floor molded. The foundation cracked. Wallpaper turned black. Soffits turned green. The carpet frayed. The banister fell down. Kitchen lights dropped from the ceiling.

U.S. Home was subject to an investigation led by Florida's attorney general. Lennar Problems at Laurel Lakes

SARASOTA -- Is the Southwest Florida real estate market so hot that home builders and developers just don't care anymore and buyers can't be bothered with due diligence?

A homeowner revolt at Laurel Lakes Phase IV -- an expensive Sarasota subdivision -- might make you think so.

Some owners have been fighting for nearly two years to get into their houses during one of the region's most blistering markets. The value of their unoccupied homes has sometimes doubled, something that irks them all the more.
